New Changes in FASB’s Proposal for Lease Accounting

In September 2010 we posted this blog on the FASB’s proposed changes to lease accounting. The FASB has recently received and reviewed comment letter responses to their original proposal. Here is a good article summarizing the changes they are considering making in their proposal for lease accounting. The changes appear to soften the FASB’s original position.

I’m glad the FASB has listened to reason. How could you treat all leases no matter what the terms as capital leases? That sounds completely ridiculous to me. The first thing that comes to my mind is auto leases – I have a client that enters into two year leases and always turns the auto in after two years and gets a new lease. How would these be considered a capital lease? The rules in place now are fine – if it ain’t broke don’t fix it.

I agree, it seems like the FASB has made several positive steps away from pure accounting theory and toward practical application over the last few months.
